The Key to Happiness that You Might be Missing

Happiness is the secret sauce of life, at the end of the day we all just want to be happy. According to The Business Insider, in 2018 Australia was ranked 10th in happiness by the World Happiness Report. Feeling happy is the ultimate goal, and yet it continues to elude so many of us.
I used to be one of those people weighed down by depression. I could never feel happy, and yet I was searching for happiness in all the wrong places. The problem wasn’t that I where I was searching, it was that I was searching at all. Here’s the thing, happiness starts within. The key to happiness isn’t in looking for external validation or material things. It’s about creating our happiness ourselves, and in my opinion, the key to happiness lies in self-acceptance. Self-acceptance is the missing link! It is the foundation of living a joyful life, which is why I am so passionate about it.
The other day I was at the supermarket, two teenage girls were browsing the aisles. One declared “I can’t get any snacks, I am too fat”. My heart sunk as I witnessed a common display of self-hatred. This girl was slim and beautiful, and the thing is, even if she wasn’t (by society’s standards) my heart would still be breaking. Those words should not belong to any of us. These sneaky declarations are so dangerous to our way of being and can be deeply detrimental to a journey towards accepting ourselves.
Self-acceptance starts here. Bringing awareness to the unconscious declarations we are making to ourselves is one of the first steps. I remember when I used to regularly make such declarations. As someone who has experienced vitiligo, I would look at my hands in disgust and declare “my hands are so ugly”. Declaring this reinforced these feelings of hatred. It perpetuated my negative self-beliefs, and I spiralled into feelings of depression and anxiety.

You don’t have to spiral as I did. If you notice yourself declaring these negative statements, celebrate yourself because you are bringing awareness to them and that is the first step. By noticing you can shift them, a simple and powerful exercise is to write down the negative declarations. Then, reframe them and replace them with a positive declaration.
For example, if you declare “I am so ugly” replace it with “I am beautiful”. You can affirm this by replacing this negative declaration with a positive one anytime you notice yourself slipping into the negativity. You don’t always have to write it down, speak it out loud.
Start with this and you will begin to release your negative self-beliefs. This will shift you to a place of self-acceptance if you commit to doing it consistently. I highly recommend incorporating it into your daily routine and making it a non-negotiable part of your life.
